This lock, just over 12cm long, is a typical example from the era of King Charles II. Thomas Hawley set up shop in London in 1681, producing his proof piece for the Gunmakers' Co then. He was elected Assistant in 1697 and Master of the Gunmakers' Co in 1701. He was Gunmaker to Ordnance 1682-1707, and died in 1719. This would have been made for an overcoat pistol and has extensive strawberry leaf engraving both on the cock and the lock. All the component parts would appear to be original. It has an even grey patina overall with patches of heavy corrosion scattered throughout, particularly in the pan and the underside of the lower jaw. Its condition is commensurate with its age. However, the area of the signature has been a little fiercely overcleaned at some point in its past. |
