This award was instituted in April 1915, some two million being awarded to the French Army up to 1920. Many thousands were also awarded to Allied troops. It ranks just below the Medaille Militaire and was automatically awarded to recipients of the Legion d'Honneur and the Medaille Militaire (combat awards only).
The ribbon is original and is in good condition. The bronze cross is lightly patinated, and there is some bruising to the reverse of the piece.
