This fine little miniature medal, complete with its original silk ribbon, is beautifully named on the edge 'J.SWAINE.QAr.Mr.2D.BATTn. THE.RL.REGt.' (the 1st Royal Regiment of Foot, the Royal Scots). Joseph Swaine checks out as being comissioned Quartermaster in this unit in November 1846; from 22 April 1855, he served with the unit at the siege and fall of Sebastopol; he was awarded the Crimea medal and clasp for Sebastopol, and the Turkish medal; in 1863, in the Hart's Army List, he is shown with the honorary rank of Captain, placed on half pay in July 1859, serving with the Northumberland Militia Artillery. It is a very nice example of a Crimean miniature, the naming having been applied to a thin silver strip into which the medal was sweated. Its condition is GVF; the ribbon is somewhat fragile, but essentially intact. (NB: The gold colour of the last photo showing the naming is because of using an indoor lighting system.) |
