This is an excellent example, with near perfect enamel and gilding and an original short length of neck ribbon. This order was instituted by the Queen in 1896 as being within her personal gift, ie not dependent on the government of the day, and is still awarded to this day for services to the state. The number on the back refers to the original recipient to whom the award was issued, a register of which is kept at the Chancery of St James's. Sadly the public have little or no access to this. |
