Title Cavalry helmet
Nationality German
Period 17th century
Sold

This rather scruffy example has been patched and repaired on the peak in several places and now has a new nasal bar. However, it is of interest insomuch as it represents the mass production variety of this helmet produced in all probability during the 30 Years War for the massive raising of dragoons on both sides.

These helmets were also worn by Imperial Austrian troops in the hard fighting on the Turkish frontier, right into the early 18th century.

There is an armourer's mark on the peak, a little indistinct, but it is there. It is visible in the bottom photo. It has a two-piece skull.

The restoration was done at the Tower of London in the 1950s to a reasonably competent standard, using traditional methods of rivetting and patching. No tig-welding here! This is how such items would have been repaired in their day. The black paintwork to the interior was effected at the same time. The cheek pieces, which are original, have been releathered (again, at the same time, in all probability).
