Field made helmet cover with insignia of Lancashire Fusiliers in embroidered wool (taken from a shoulder strap) sewn onto the side. Complete with original drawstring. Aged with heavy dust impregnation, but generally sound. Should improve with a light handwash. For illustrations of this type of cover in use on both officers' and other ranks' helmets, see David Smurthwaite's 'The Boer War 1899-1902' (Hamlyn, 1999; ISBN 0 600 60773 9), pages 33, 56, 88, 96, 102 & 115. Some of these illustrations clearly show various regimental insignia stitched to the side of the cover, as on this example. |
