militaria
This field covers uniforms, headdress and badges from the 18th century through to Third Reich items from the 20th century. Much of this material can be seen in context in contemporary prints/drawings and other art work, eg bronzes and photographs. I keep a very sharp eye out for, and a photographic record of, all the particularly convincing Third Reich fakes that come my way. Good reference books include: The Emperor's Coat by Rest, Ortner & Ilming (Verlag Militaria) on Austro-Hungarian militaria, Great War period; Shoulder-belt plates and buttons by Parkyn on British militaria; two volumes by King on British military headdress badges. The National Army Museum (Royal Hospital Road, London SW3) has an excellent bookshop and display covering the British side of this great subject.

RN Petty Officer's cap badge - British
This is a nice example of the king's crown petty officer's badge worn by the Royal Navy and the Royal Naval Air Service in the early years of the 20th century, indeed technically right up to the introduction of the queen's crown badge in 1953.

Pair of Prussian trench art ashtrays - German
These are slightly unusual trench art products, inasmuch as they appear to be made from sheet brass, possibly cut from a shell case, but the unusual decorative feature is the centrepiece which in each case is the central device from a Prussian waist buckle, one with a deep crown and one with a shallow one.

1859 Campaign of Italy medal - French
This is Napoleon III's medal for the 1859 campaign, mostly fought in northern Italy against Austrian troops. On the reverse is 'Campagne d'Italie' with the names of six battles, including Magenta and Solferino, perhaps the most famous one. The artist's signature is below the emperor's bust, which is surrounded by the logo 'Napoleon III empereur'.

Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers busby bomb - British
In 1881 the regimental numbering system was altered and two regiments (27th & 108th) were amalgamated into the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (a distinguished Northern Irish regiment). The busby bomb was introduced in 1865, but, as this badge is not numbered, it is post-1881.

Coastal Artillery cap with SS badges - German
This dangerous fake would deceive many collectors. The cap is a genuine Coastal Artillery item; the soutache and the badges have all been added to 'create' a more interesting commercial prospect! The skull badge is certainly bogus and the eagle is not totally convincing, but might still be OK.

Waffen SS helmet, double decal - German
THIS FAKE IS ON THE WEBSITE AS A WARNING! It is not in my possession as the client on whose behalf I was selling it returned it to his source. The shell and the party decal are OK, together with the bulk of the paintwork, but the SS decal has been added much later, perhaps only ten years ago, possibly to replace a damaged police decal.
