Title Pot metal plaque, signed F. Opitz
Nationality Austrian
Period 1916
Price £60.00

This may well have been a larger version of a fund-raising badge similar to the regimental tinnies that the KuK army wore on their hats in WW1. This art work, produced by Ferdinand Optiz (1885-1956) from Prague, is symbolic of the realist school that developed during WW1 and produced some quite strong, dramatic images of the human figure.

The piece is, sadly, decaying and one corner has been damaged. The metalwork itself has shrunk and twisted with age and is full of fracture cracks, altough this may have happened when the piece was cast, as pot metal, being such poor material, can do strange things when the metal contracts after being poured into the mould.

It measures approximately 7 inches square.

testimonials

Sword arrived today. Fabulous. This is an excellent example of a fighting sword of its period, and a real gem. The 1828 Pattern is such a gorgeous sword, and this is a fine example. Even my bride is impressed and she doesn’t really get swords.
