This extremely rare armoured example is made by Schellenberg, one of the top Berlin makers. There is a nice thumb mark on the underside of the peak, showing the owner to have almost certainly been a right-handed gentleman! This cap bears all the hallmarks of the Schellenberg product, viz Schiffer on Third Reich caps. This is in reality a field grey colour, not the blue grey it appears in some of the pictures. The wool is of fine quality tricot variety, typical of early war production. These coloured piped caps (other than white) were authorised in 1940 and then Himmler cancelled the authorisation in December of the same year, perhaps disliking the association of his boys with army practice. There is some minor damage to the lining, which is of the leatherette variety. |
