This cap would have been worn by a Pioneer officer in the Waffen SS in the early years of WW2. The Pioneers were responsible for bridge-building, flame-thrower team, etc. This has 1940 pattern Bevo SS other ranks insignia and the lining is stamped 'Maria Damm 57' (the 57 indicates size). The black soutache would appear to be silk or rayon, while the main fabric is a high grade tricot wool with silver coloured aluminium piping. There is a small leather liner at the front of the cap and the liner appears to be made of a purply-brown self striped rayon. There are no vent holes, but I have seen police issue officer versions of this cap without them. The 1940 pattern Schiffchen, which replaced this, also had none. There is remarkably little wear or fading on this piece, except on the soutache where there is some wear. |
