Title Spike for Home Service officer's helmet, gilt
Nationality British
Period c 1879 on
Sold

This is the top finial for the infantry officer's Home Service helmet, worn between 1871 and 1914. The Home Service helmet was made of cork and covered in blue cloth or sometimes dark green or grey wool with a linen lining. These helmets were influenced in their design by the Prussian picklehaube of the 19th century.

The screw thread is still reasonably sharp. There has been a minor repair (involving lead solder) to the base of the spike. I suspect the gilt finish to be of relatively recent origin.

Hanger arrived safe and sound 11.30ish today. Very pleased, it's as expected. Your excellent pics make all the difference in terms of confident buying over the net. As a matter of interest, the frog, which as you said is very a/f, is, as you thought, 'spot on'. On closer inspection it is a mk.1 Naval Frog, designated 'for cutlasses'. Date seems around 1860ish give or take.

By the way, I think your site is very user friendly. Seems to work much better than many and up to date, a rarity!!!
