This is the basic ersatz Prussian soldier's buckle of WW1. It was produced as an economy measure to replace the 1896 pattern, which was in two pieces (a box plate of brass with a white metal centre). This replacement item was die-struck in steel and painted field grey. This retains perhaps 30% of its original paintwork and is lightly patinated overall. Prov: from the J.R. Gaunt & Son Ltd. Pattern Book Archive, sold at auction by order of the National Army Museum, London. |
