Title Infantry officer's shako
Nationality French
Period c 1830
Sold

This Louis Philippe period piece - the red, white and blue cockade (previously white) came in after Charles X vacated the throne in 1830 - may well be a Paris National Guard item on account of the silver colour of the lace, fittings and badge. The red pompom and grenade emblems all suggest a Grenadier company.

The body of the hat is beaver skin on card with a leather top. The top has suffered some damage and has an old repair. The black velvet band at the base of the shako is probably a replacement. The lining is somewhat distressed, but clearly original.

Sword arrived today. Fabulous. This is an excellent example of a fighting sword of its period, and a real gem. The 1828 Pattern is such a gorgeous sword, and this is a fine example. Even my bride is impressed and she doesn’t really get swords.
