Title Home Service officer's helmet cloverleaf mount, gilt
Nationality British
Period c 1879 on
Sold

This is the cross piece for the volunteer infantry officer's Home Service helmet, worn between 1871 and 1914. The Home Service helmet was made of cork and covered in blue cloth or sometimes dark green or grey wool with a linen lining. These helmets were influenced in their design by the Prussian picklehaube of the 19th century.

The condition is excellent, with some minor buckling and virtually all its gilt finish remaining. However, one of the rosettes and the securing nuts are missing.

Just a short note to let you know that I have collected the Police fur cap this morning from the Post Office. I am really happy with it, and for sure I will give a thumbs-up to your service. This was the first item I ever bought from you, and I hope it will not be the last.
