Title Home Service officer's helmet cloverleaf mount, gilt
Nationality British
Period c 1879 on
Sold

This is the cross piece for the volunteer infantry officer's Home Service helmet, worn between 1871 and 1914. The Home Service helmet was made of cork and covered in blue cloth or sometimes dark green or grey wool with a linen lining. These helmets were influenced in their design by the Prussian picklehaube of the 19th century.

The condition is excellent, with some minor buckling and 98% of the original gilt finish remaining. However, the nuts which secure the mount to the helmet are missing.

Sword arrived today. Fabulous. This is an excellent example of a fighting sword of its period, and a real gem. The 1828 Pattern is such a gorgeous sword, and this is a fine example. Even my bride is impressed and she doesn’t really get swords.
