Title City of London & Westminster Light Horse Volunteers silver shoulder belt plate
Nationality British
Period 1797
Sold

This is hall marked for London 1797, with maker's mark (FT, probably Francis Thirkell), king's head and lion passant. These plates had a high survival rate, being made for all ranks, illustrating the relative wealth of the unit (bankers, lawyers, etc). If ever there was an iconic SBP for the yeomanry cavalry of the Napoleonic wars, this is it!

This plate has been faked extensively as a cast copy. However, the distinguishing feature on the copies is that the hallmarks appear to have a matted ground to the field of the punch, whereas in the originals it is completely flat. Its condition is excellent for its age with relatively little serious wear.

You worked your magic again. The knife arrived this afternoon without any problem. [My husband] is quite delighted with it.

I am more and more pleased with the sword, and am wondering whether to do an article on it...
