This is a splendid set in double-side old Sheffield plate, with only the addition of a new leather connecting strap (at some stage). This pattern shako was worn between 1829 and 1844. The colour of the metal would suggest a militia unit with silver buttons rather than a line regiment with gilt. These very rarely appear on the market as spare parts, hence my somewhat fancy price! A complete shako in good order is worth some ?3-4,500. The overall condition is excellent, with some minor tarnishing to the scales. |
