Title Large silver gallantry award, Franz Josef I (tailor's copy)
Nationality Austrian
Period 19th century
Price £25.00

The award was given for combat gallantry and the German inscription on the reverse reads 'for bravery'. These copies were made for the soldier to wear on his uniform for everyday use, while keeping the best one for special occasions.

This particular example is struck in brass and heavily silver plated. It is the large version and measures 42mm in diameter. One noticeable feature is the absence of the sculptor's initials on the bust of the emperor, together with a slight lack of definition of his uniform, indicating that it is a copy piece.

The condition is excellent for its age and the piece has been laquered. The brass shows through at various points on the rim, more on the reverse than the obverse, reflecting regular everyday wear. The ribbon is original but somewhat soiled with age.

The day the blunderbuss arrives I could not stop looking and feeling the gun for at least one hour. My wife told me that I was sick........ I am very happy, it is a piece of craftsmanship! Well made! I have 5 blunderbusses but all iron barrel, also from England but this one is gorgeous with the Brass Barrel.

Please keep me informed when you have any other type of blunderbuss. Thanks my friend!

Hanger arrived safe and sound 11.30ish today. Very pleased, it's as expected. Your excellent pics make all the difference in terms of confident buying over the net. As a matter of interest, the frog, which as you said is very a/f, is, as you thought, 'spot on'. On closer inspection it is a mk.1 Naval Frog, designated 'for cutlasses'. Date seems around 1860ish give or take.

By the way, I think your site is very user friendly. Seems to work much better than many and up to date, a rarity!!!
