Title Pair of Electoral bonnet cufflinks
Nationality German
Period c 1860
Price £90.00

The Electors of the Holy Roman Empire elected the Emperor on the death of the previous incumbent. At its height, there were about 60 Electoral princes and bishops within the Empire, all of whom had the right to vote in the imperial election, but, by the end of the 19th century, it had become a formality with only heraldic significance.

Only male descendants (primogeniture) of Electoral families would have had the right to wear these cufflinks, which must, therefore, be relatively rare.

Each bonnet measures just under 1.5cm across and they are made of silver (with an 800 silver mark and a maker's mark, AP in an oval lozenge) and red, blue and white enamel. Some of the 'jewels' (they appear to be little garnets) on each bonnet are missing (two out of three missing on one and all three present on the other, with one damaged), but that is to be expected with the wear and tear associated with cufflinks. The condition of the enamel is perfect, apart from the odd scratch. There is no restoration. Very handsome and unusual male jewellery!

testimonials

[From a vendor, rather than a buyer]

I'm delighted that you are happy with the badge and I hope you can sell it to someone who will value owning it.

I tried to sell it on eBay but they won't accept Nazi items. I then contacted several dealers via a Google search who mostly offered me £40-£50 after some haggling. Most of the other dealers tried to conceal its true value in their replies and also lacked manners which doesn't inspire confidence.

Ultimately it's about trust. I should think that most prospective sellers have done their own research and therefore know roughly what their item is worth. You were the only dealer who had the integrity to concede that my valuation was approximately correct and I respect your comment that you can't offer this as you need to make a profit. Your honest approach is greatly appreciated and I felt comfortable taking the risk in sending it to you.

Thank you for a smooth transaction
