In 1881 the regimental numbering system was altered and two regiments (94th & 88th) were amalgamated into the Connaught Rangers (one of the more celebrated of the old Irish regiments), so this buckle would have been manufactured before then, although its use by an officer in the 2nd Battalion of the new regiment would have continued. The regiment was disbanded in 1922 on the partition of Ireland. These buckles replaced the old shoulder belt plates of Crimea vintage and earlier and were worn on the buff leather belt in the field and the gold bullion belt for dress duties. The gilding to the centre ground is still intact, but typically that on the sides is somewhat worn. The gilding on the reverse has been lost completely. |
