This is a little political souvenir from the momentous days before 1914 when Ireland was in turmoil in the north, owing to events like the Curragh incident, when British army officers of Ulster extraction threatened to resign their comissions if Ireland got home rule. The YCV amalgamated with the Ulster Volunteer Force in 1914 and thereafter had a most distinguished record in the Ulster Division in WW1. Its condition is excellent and there is no maker's mark, quite possibly a local product or a button maker who was a little coy about producing this material when contracts with the British army might be at risk. |
