A 'C' under a star punched in a small circle at the base of the blade is a French inspection mark for 1815. However, the other marks refer to German arms dealers who had acquired the piece after Waterloo, in particular the firm of H & R Boker, active in the mid-19th century. This is the classic infantry hanger of Napoleon's armies. The original inscription on the back of the blade has been defaced by successive owners. There is a small hole in the scabbard leather and some minor damage to the brass mounts, but generally the piece is in excellent shape for its age. Hard to find original scabbards for these, in any case. |
