Title Winterhilfswerk ceramic figures in peasant costume
Nationality German
Period c 1936-37
Sold

Winterhilfswerk (WHW) was a state organisation dedicated to the relief of the poor and the homeless during the winter months (October to March). Little hand painted ceramic figures (originally on pins), of which these are representative, were given out by WHW personnel in the street in exchange for contributions.

The condition of these (16 averaging approximately 4 cms in height) is by and large good, but one neck has been broken and glued and there is a chip to the front of one foot. Also, the pin backing has been pulled out, which was common practice by American veterans, who brought this material back from Germany after WW2.
