Winterhilfswerk (WHW) was a state organisation dedicated to the relief of the poor and the homeless during the winter months (October to March). Little hand painted ceramic figures (originally on pins), of which these are representative, were given out by WHW personnel in the street in exchange for contributions. The condition of these (averaging approximately 4.5 cms in height) is by and large good, but there is a tiny chip to the front of one boot of the man with the pickaxe. Also, the pin backing has been pulled out, which was common practice by American veterans, who brought this material back from Germany after WW2. |
