Title Whitworth bayonet marked for 2nd/60th
Nationality British
Period c 1860
Price £500.00

This is the bayonet for the .451 muzzle-loading Whitworth rifle. In extensive trials these were issued in 1863-67 to infantry units, including various guards and rifle regiments. Some 8,000 bayonets were produced, the general scale of issue being some 68 rifles and bayonets per regiment. The 2nd Battalion 60th were in the Maori Wars 1860-70.

In 40 years' trading I may only have had a dozen of these, and this is the first time I've found a unit-marked example.

The blade is 22.75" long and 1.25" wide at the forte. Both blade and hilt mounts show a modicum of wear/patina, but have all relevant ordnance stamps. The scabbard leather is in excellent shape with a weapon number, 1458, stamped near the top mount. Both leather grips show service/age wear. The reverse cross guard is stamped: 2.60.320 (for 2nd Battalion 60th/Kings Royal Rifle Corps, rifle number 320).

The sword arrived on time and in fantastic condition.

Sword arrived today. Fabulous. This is an excellent example of a fighting sword of its period, and a real gem. The 1828 Pattern is such a gorgeous sword, and this is a fine example. Even my bride is impressed and she doesn’t really get swords.
