Title Wheellock pistol
Nationality Dutch
Period c 1640
Sold

This fine pistol has a 20-inch/50cm rifled barrel (approx .55 calibre). The lock is the final development of the genre with a set trigger (adjustment screw missing). The stock is marked 'R?P.III', likely to be the stockmaker/gunmaker. Wheellocks of this type would have been used in the 30 Years War and in the frontier fighting against the Turks.

The barrel appears to have a faintly struck Augsburg town mark in the form of a pineapple, visible under the lock plate, near the touch hole. The interior of the lock has most of its original blue finish and all the screws and component elements of the lock would appear to be original. The rammer is iron-mounted ash and may well be contemporary. There is a small triangular replacement chip at the base of the butt. The gun is stocked in pear wood and the wheel cover has a gilt finish. The pommel would appear to be brass. There is a folding extension to the trigger guard.

Officer's pistols of this quality and period rarely appear on the market, especially ones with rifled barrels.
