These bayonets were probably either captured Mexican pieces from the border wars in the early 20th century or were custom built by Remington for the US Navy Lee rifle. This is a modified form of the Mexican issue, inasmuch as it has a US-style steel belt hook where the Mexican originals had a leather one. The Mexican bayonets were made by Remington for their single action rolling block rifle, which they sold to the Mexican government in the 1890s. The Lee rifle, by contrast, was a bolt action magazine weapon. The condition is consonant with its age and use; typically some blueing remaining to the scabbard mounts and the belt hook. The blade, grips and hilt are among the nicest I have had of this type. |
