This classic Union cavalry sabre, with nearly 100% of its original polish to the blade, is marked 'EMERSON & SILVER//TRENTON//N.J.' at the forte, Emerson & SIlver being one of the rarer Union makers with only some 27,000 being made in the course of the war (the Ames swords have recently been reproduced in India). The other side of the forte is stamped 'US//D.F.M.//' and part of a date, possibly for 1864. The blade has most of its original factory polish, the original leather washer and a fine black leather grip with its original brass wiring. The brasswork is lightly patinated with some dark brown spotting and there is an inspector's stamp on the pommel, 'D.F.M.' matching the stamp at the forte. The scabbard has a plum brown finish, with a little heavier corrosion on the iron drag. There is a nice brazing seam running the length of the forward edge. |
