This fiersome weapon has the distinction of being the first knuckle knife officially issued to any army in wartime. The pattern was designed by Henry Disston & Sons of Philadelphia. This particular example was made by Landers, Frari & Clark (L.F.&C. as shown on the guard). It was an issue weapon for close combat work for the troops in the trenches. 113,000 of these knives were produced by this company (ie LF&C) and another smaller company (Oneida Community Ltd, New York State) made another 10,000 pieces. Its condition is superb for the age, the scabbard showing some signs of wear and tear, but still having the bulk of its green leather stain intact and all its original blueing on the hilt and blade, together with a beautiful walnut grip. |
