This is struck in gilding metal to commemorate Germany's part in the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion. The German ambassador to China had his head taken off in Peking by the Boxers, the spark which triggered the defence of the Peking legations in the European quarter of the city. The official medal came with a series of bars attached to the ribbon for the actions in which the recipient took part. This little medal is clearly a private enterprise specimen, possibly produced before the official medal came out, but nonetheless interesting, having an inscription in Chinese on the obverse surrounding a portrait bust of Emperor William, and on the reverse, 'In memory of my service in China' (in German), with a blank panel superimposed on a stand of arms for the recipient's name to be engraved. This is 29mm in diameter and its condition is GVF. Sadly, there is no ribbon. |
