The RND was raised in the Great War from men from the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. The enamel medieval sailing ship device is the heraldic emblem of the Cinque Ports of southern England and was also used by the Sussex Division of the RNVR, who, as part of the RND, fought with great distinction at Gallipoli and later on the Western Front in WW1. One medal is inscribed 'PETTY OFFICER // L.J.WYATT // TIDWORTH LEAGUE [football] // 1918-1919' with 'ROYAL NAVAL DIVISION' below. The other medal (RNVR) is marked 'SUSSEX DIVISION' above '1935 // CHAMBERLIN CUP // L.WYATT.O.S.' The men obviously, therefore, belonged to the same family, possibly father and son. The condition is fine for their age; the enamel is in good shape and there is just a little age wear on both pieces. The RNVR medal is hallmarked for Birmingham 1934, while the RND one is for 1918. All these RND/RNVR medals came together from one source. |
