Title Turkish spear head
Nationality Turkish
Period 17th century
Sold

This is one of a small collection of Turkish spear heads, purchased near Marmaris several years ago. This piece has been carefully cleaned and there is still some grey patina/martensite remaining on the shaft. The overall length is 40cms. There are two small holes drilled at the base of the socket to hold the piece in place on its wooden shaft.

These spears were typically carried by Turkish cavalry in the many wars with Austria in the 17th century and, in particular, the attempt to seize Vienna in the 1680s. There is a lead Turkish cultural export permit seal with 'M' on one side for Marmaris and 'EX' on the other.
