Title Turkish spear head
Nationality Turkish
Period 17th century
Sold

This is one of a small collection of Turkish spear heads, purchased near Marmaris several years ago. This piece has extensive traces of martensite (deposit that forms on metal when left in clay over time) on the blade, which could be cleaned off, perhaps an hour's careful work by hand. The overall length is 41cms.

These spears were typically carried by Turkish cavalry in the many wars with Austria in the 17th century and, in particular, the attempt to seize Vienna in the 1680s. They would, of course, have been mounted on long wooden shafts. There is a lead Turkish cultural export permit seal with 'M' on one side for Marmaris and 'EX' on the other.

The base of the socket is a little ragged.

Just to let you know that the kokarde [cockade] arrived today. Looks great. Definitely original.

The helmet arrived the day before yesterday and I had a look at it today and everything looks perfect. You packed it up very well indeed. ... I've never seen him so thrilled with a gift!
