This relatively uncommon badge was designed to be worn on the white helmet in tropical climes and replaced the numbered glengarry badge oif the pre-1881 era. There was an officer's version in silver. The Gibraltar battle honour commemorates the 12th Foot's part in that epic defence in the 1780s. The badge appears to be in die-struck brass as opposed to gilding metal. This is consonant with it replacing the numbered glengarry badge of the pre-1881 era, as these were also made of brass as opposed to the gilding metal of the later cap badges. It measures nearly 5.5cm across and, although there is a little age distortion to the badge and a small lead solder repair to the left hand tower, it appears to possess its original lugs and is generally in good shape for the age of the piece. |
