Title Springfield rifle bayonet, model 1905
Nationality American
Period 1907
Sold

This is the bayonet which the US troops carried in WW1 (although this has the WW2 issue plastic scabbard marked USN) and was for the first bolt action rifle of the US Army in 30/30 calibre, which was the 1903 pattern Springfield. The navy continued to use these rifles through WW2, hence the plastic scabbard.

The original scabbard was canvas covered wood with a leather chape and was significantly bulkier than the plastic variety and obviously not so suitable for sea-going conditions. The later manufactured versions of this bayonet had plastic grips. The blade was subsequently shortened for WW2 issue with the M1 Garrand rifle, hence the relative scarcity of these bayonets with their full-length blade.

This blade has much of its original Parkerised finish and is clearly dated 1907 with US ordnance marks. The wood grips are in reasonable shape and there's a nice patinated blackened age finish to the ironwork of the hilt.

testimonials

Just to let you know that the bayonets arrived safely this morning and I am extremely happy! They are everything that I had hoped they would be, but better! I am extremely pleased that i purchased them from you. The 1867 Albini ... is an absolute beauty, the blade is immaculate. The other is in fact in far better condition that I had imagined as well. So all in all, I couldn't be happier! Many thanks Chris.

I very much look forward to doing business with you again in the near future.
