This is a nice example of the Pioneer carbine bayonet, complete with leather frog and much original finish on the scabbard. The blade is ordnance marked with the Swiss cross and a maker mark: 'HS'. These sawback bayonets would have been carried by Pioneer elements within Swiss infantry regiments, and, in a leather scabbard, by engineer troops. Apart from two small edge nicks (one 3" from the point, the other some 4" from the forte), the blade is in good shape. The walnut grips are in excellent condition, with some light age bruising from service wear and tear. The hilt would appear to be stainless steel or just possibly a high grade chrome finish. |
