Title Saddle frog for 1908 pattern trooper's sword
Nationality British
Period 1917
Sold

This is the long pattern of frog for this sword. The other shorter and fatter pattern incorporated a horseshoe pouch. This particular example is dated 1917 and has what appear to be regimental markings stamped into it. These frogs are quite rare, this particular one being found in an armoury in Jordan, probably Amman.

There is a little rot to one of the loops which holds the metal buckle in place, but the buckle does actually still hold. However, if you were to place a sword in this, you would have to be extremely careful, just in case the remaining leatherwork broke. The leatherwork was very dry when I bought it, but I have saddle-soaped it carefully and then given it a good soaking with AutoGlym leather cream, which has brought it up. It is still a little stiff and dry, but repeated applications of a good beeswax cream would eventually sort this out.

There is the odd cut to the leatherwork here and there, from service, I suspect, but, generally speaking, it is still in quite good shape. I normally get ?75 each for these if they are in good shape.

A quick note to let you know I received the two painted truncheons today and both arrived in good nick!

I'm very pleased with them and they will be a nice addition to my collection!

[From a vendor, rather than a buyer]

I'm delighted that you are happy with the badge and I hope you can sell it to someone who will value owning it.

I tried to sell it on eBay but they won't accept Nazi items. I then contacted several dealers via a Google search who mostly offered me £40-£50 after some haggling. Most of the other dealers tried to conceal its true value in their replies and also lacked manners which doesn't inspire confidence.

Ultimately it's about trust. I should think that most prospective sellers have done their own research and therefore know roughly what their item is worth. You were the only dealer who had the integrity to concede that my valuation was approximately correct and I respect your comment that you can't offer this as you need to make a profit. Your honest approach is greatly appreciated and I felt comfortable taking the risk in sending it to you.

Thank you for a smooth transaction
