This sword by Gieves (engraved on the forte of the blade) is a George V example, typical of RN officer's swords used in both wars, the later examples, as here, having a rather slim blade and lightweight grip, as against the earlier ones which were rather more substantial. Interestingly, German practice followed a similar path. The name 'S.L. Lord. R.N.' is engraved on the flap. This man was a surgeon in WW2. The sword also has its original leather case with the initials S.L.L. stamped on the flap. The leather is a little flaky in parts and there is some old damp staining, but all the stitching appears sound. The gilding on this sword is in good shape, with a little wear to the inside and the flap of the guard. The blade has most of its factory finish, with a little minor age staining scattered throughout. The rayskin grip is in good shape with all its original gilt wiring intact. There is a bullion sword knot in very poor shape (see photo). |
