This pattern is distinguished by its straight blade - the first RN cutlass to depart from the tradition of the curved blade (with the sole exception of the 1805 pattern) - and its cast iron grips. The final pattern had a chequered leather grip, with a fullered blade, thus quite different, sharing only the guard with the turned over edges. It has an issue date for 1892 stamped into the forte, along with various inspectors' stamps. It has the bulk of its original black paint to the grip. Originally, there would have been an iron-mounted leather scabbard, which, sadly, has been lost. The blade was lightly rusted overall and I have carefully cleaned this to produce a reasonable finish. |
