The eagle commemorates the capture of the standard of the French 8th Regiment by the 87th (a former incarnation of the Royal Irish Fusiliers) at the Battle of Barrossa in 1811. It is a bi-metal badge, the eagle being fitted loosely to the grenade by two brass blades bent over at the back. Its condition is excellent, although there is dried metal polish on the face of the badge. |
