Title Queen's Marshalman's sword
Nationality British
Period c 1840
Sold

The Queen's Marshalmen were the officers of the Marshalsea Court, founded under Henry VIII (of England, 1491-1547), as King's Marshalmen, to resolve disputes between household staff at his palaces. They had jurisdiction within 12 miles of Whitehall (London). There were never more than about six officers at any given point in their history.

This is an extremely rare sword. There were probably never more than half a dozen of these swords ever made, as they would have been passed on from one retiring officer to the next (see the mark '1' on the reverse of the top chape). This was retailed by Hawkes & Moseley, marked accordingly on the forte of the blade and the reverse of the top chape (somewhat polished). The bulk of the blade has the original factory finish and includes the royal cypher, acid etched amid foliage on both sides of the blade. A unique opportunity to acquire a very rare royal household item.

Good news, my friend, the boot knife has arrived safe and sound. This example will more than fill my collection need.

Hanger arrived safe and sound 11.30ish today. Very pleased, it's as expected. Your excellent pics make all the difference in terms of confident buying over the net. As a matter of interest, the frog, which as you said is very a/f, is, as you thought, 'spot on'. On closer inspection it is a mk.1 Naval Frog, designated 'for cutlasses'. Date seems around 1860ish give or take.

By the way, I think your site is very user friendly. Seems to work much better than many and up to date, a rarity!!!
