This die-struck gilding metal badge is obviously intended to be worn on a cap, or possibly a lapel, because of its small size (3.5cm high). I am working in the dark, but I am guessing it is for a postman because of the motif of the hunting horns with the electrical arrows (telegraph). Despite its tiny size, the different state arms of Russia are clearly visible throughout the double-headed eagle's wingspan, St George and the dragon being prominent in the centre of his breast. There is remarkably little wear on the piece, which is constructed in three pieces, viz the eagle, the wreath and the postal insignia (if that is what it is!). |
