This high quality piece was possibly made for the export market, as there are no proofs on the frame or barrel. This would have been loaded with black powder poured to fill the breech, a soft lead ball then placed on the cup with the barrel screwed tight on the load, producing a near perfect gas seal (an invention of the mid-17th century). The hammer is slightly off set in the frame and has an ebonised butt, perhaps walnut with a heavy stain. The action is crisp, the nipple a little a/f, with a small crack to the neck of the hammer. The barrel (6cm) is star cut at the muzzle (for a wrench) and has a discernible Damascus twist. At close range this would be deadly. |
