The barrel of this little truncheon (approx 1' long) is decorated with 'Parish of Liskeard', 'VR', '1856', a plough and a large royal crown in gold on a red field. At that time, Liskeard was a small fishing village in Cornwall. This truncheon would have been used by the parish constable to make arrests. The heavy varnish over the painted decoration on the barrel has crazed in parts, although it does not in any way obscure the overall designs. There is wear to the paint work at the various extremities of the piece. The grip appears to be painted dark brown. I am guessing, but I think the wood is box wood. |
