These locks are a modification of Manton's 1816 patent pellet lock, which was virtually Manton's only serious design failure in what was an amazingly inventive career. They are almost certainly locks for shotguns and are marked 'Lowe of Chester', more than likely Thomas Lowe of Chester, 1792-1834. The cock heads are easily detachable and would seem to be designed to function either with some form of ignition patch or a regular copper cap. They are about 12cm long. Their condition is generally good, but one sear spring is missing, two bridle screws have been replaced and one is missing entirely, while one bridle screw location is broken off. |
