This is plate 38 from the Troupes Etrangeres series, published by Martinet (15 rue du Coq, Paris). These were produced for the occupying armies in the first occupation in 1814 on Napoleon's exile to Elba. The Swedes are included on account of their presence on the field at Leipzig in 1813, when they fought against Napoleon. Napoleon had been counting on the support of his old marshal Bernadotte, now king of Sweden, who at the last minute changed his mind and came out against him. The print measures 17.5 x 25.5cm and the hand colouring is still good and bright. There are losses to two edges, but the plate mark is intact. There are some small pin holes suggesting it has pinned in place at some stage. There is one small patch of acid free tape on the back, sealing a small tear (visible on the image in the form of a small white line on the parapet in front of the gun barrel). |
