Title Napoleonic aquatint print by Genty - Gendarme a Pied
Nationality French
Period 1815
Sold

This shows a Gendarme a Pied of the Garde de Paris, right at the end of the Empire. Note that he still sports the red, white and blue cockade; under the Bourbons this was changed to plain white. The Gendarmes a Pied were responsible for preserving law and order in Paris.

The page has come from an album called 'Troupes Francaises' and is numbered 8 and dated 1815 at the top right. It was published by Genty (14 rue St Jacques, Paris).

The whole print measures 30.5 x 22.5cm and the hand colouring is still nice and bright. However, there is a 1.5cm tear at the bottom right, together with various abrasions on the edge of the piece, mostly visible in my image of the print. The word 'Imperiale' has been pencilled in at the bottom left corner to inform the ignorant!

The 3 medals have just arrived safely - very interesting. (From your description I was expecting ribbon to be dreadful; personally, I think that the "Russian Front" is beautifully 'aged'.)

Picked up the dirk this morning and actually waited until I got back home before unwrapping the package. It really exceeded my expectations...whilst the photos were good, to see and feel it in three dimensions was very exciting. A beatutful piece Chris, and worth the wait.
