Christopher Muller from Leipzig served in Ersatzreserve 1 from 23 May 1940, initially in a transport unit, serving mostly with transport companies until in August to November 1944 he served in a motorised bridging column, perhaps one of the more unusual units of the army. The rest of his service was with snow clearance companies. His final rank appears to have been Obergefreiter and he was awarded the Winterschlacht im Osten Medaille. The inside back cover of the pass is stamped 'Donated to R.I. Military Museum by Frank J. Popiel BG. RIARNG'. On the page where his active service is described, a small typed piece of paper has been inserted, dated 1944, describing him as being involved in the action of Army Group Centre, culminating in him being taken prisoner on 20 April 1945, his whereabouts unknown. I don't know if he survived Russian captivity, but the survival of his paybook testifies to his probable release in 1955 when most of the German prisoners were repatriated, having spent ten years rebuilding Russian roads and bridges, etc. The pass comes together with his qualification document, stating use of weapons and so on, and a document describing him physically and his background. |
