Probably made as a Red Cross fund raiser in the early years of WW1, this would have been sold on the streets throughout GB, alongside the Belgian and Serbian flags. It is a faithful rendering of the old Czarist flag in miniature, with St George and the dragon on the central shield (for Moscow) and red blobs on the eagle's wings for the provinces. Interestingly, this flag has been reinstated by Vladimir Putin, himself now the new de facto czar! It would appear to be made of silk or possibly mercerised cotton. Folded it is 60mm by 36mm. The colours are nice and bright (not faded). Obviously this has been treasured over the years. |
