This was designed for the model 1898 Mauser carbine, hence the flash guard on the back of the hilt. The forte is marked 'P D Lunenschloss, Solingen'. It was designed for pioneer troops within infantry, artillery, fortress and railway units. There is a Prussian ordnance acceptance stamp for 1916 on the back of the forte. The blade measures nearly 14.5" and has had some rather clumsy sharpening. There are old oil stains to the grips near the bolts. There is scattered light pitting to scabbard and hilt, now mostly cleaned out, with some bruising and distortion to the top of the scabbard. The back edge of the scabbard has been used as a hammer, leaving some severe marks/bruises. Hence the price! |
